I survived the first week!

We had our first week of school. Everyone came out for the better. We completed a science experiment today. We had to get a peeled hard boiled egg into a jar that was about one inch in diameter. The goal was to not mutilate the egg. Well, the theory is to put a fire inside the glass jar and place the egg small side down on the mouth of the jar. Since fire needs air and consumes it, the egg is then drawn into the jar. Our egg trials got about half way in before the force of the suction broke the egg in two. It was pretty neat to see the egg go inside the jar. It reminded me of the Santa Clause movie where Tim Allen gets sucked into the different fireplaces.
Allyn was so excited...he wanted to light the "sticks". I had to keep telling him they were matches and the box says to keep them away from children. There was no way I was going to let my 10 year old light matches in our house, next to lots of school papers! Outside, at a campground, with his dad and a bucket of water near is the place for that!!!
On another note, I was sitting in my driveway chatting with a friend, watching the squirrels frollick in the yard when the most unusual thing happened. We got to witness a new generation of squirrels being created right there on my low stone wall next to my door! The feisty little buggers were so engrossed in the task at hand that they fell off the wall and landed next to my garden hose. We didn't see head or tail come out of the area for some time. Exciting, another generation of the pesky critters. Luckily, the kids were all inside and I didn't have to explain to them what was going on!
